The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 15 Marine Brigade has passed out 53 soldiers who completed rigorous training in Coxswain Level II and Maritime Basic Induction courses at the Marine Sustainment Base in Ntokolo, Mayuge District.
Of the graduates, 22 completed the Coxswain Level II course, while 31 undertook the Maritime Basic Induction course, marking a key milestone in strengthening the brigade’s operational capacity.
Brigadier General Godwin Karugaba, UPDF Joint Staff Logistics, commended the marine forces for safeguarding Uganda’s shared lakes and rivers, which form part of the country’s strategic security infrastructure. “These resources with neighbouring countries can be exploited as routes for hostile forces. We thank the UPDF Marine Forces for diligently protecting them and ensuring peace and stability,” he said.
Karugaba noted that the completion of the courses further enhances the UPDF’s capability as a professional, modern force. Highlighting the strategic importance of Uganda’s water bodies—which cover roughly 15 percent of the country—he emphasized the critical role of a well-trained marine component in national defense.
The Commander of the 15 Marine Brigade, Brigadier General Michael Nyarwa, lauded the Chief of Defence Forces for his commitment to capacity building, noting that the brigade operates across land, air, and water domains.
Colonel David Kararira, Commandant of the Marine Training School, described the courses as foundational, equipping personnel with navigation, small boat handling, maritime safety, and operational readiness skills.
Outstanding trainees were recognised during the ceremony. Corporal Denis Akantorana was named best overall in the Coxswain course, Corporal Victor Agaba excelled in small boat handling, and Private Collins Kyawe was awarded best in navigation.
The ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Richard Wakayinja, Resident District Commissioner Ramathan Walugembe, Chairman-elect LCV David Zijja, senior UPDF officers, and other distinguished guests.
